NADP Spring Meeting and Scientific Symposium

2026 Theme: Thinking Outside the Bucket: Innovation in a Changing Environment

June 12, 2026

About the Meeting

The meeting is intended for scientists, resource managers, educators, students, policymakers, and others interested in atmospheric deposition, air quality, and its effects on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. NADP data has been used for decades to understand and solve real-world problems impacting people and the planet, including helping to facilitate cleaner water, healthier air quality, more productive fisheries, informed environmental planning, improved air quality and climate forecasting, and responsible environmental stewardship.

The Leopold Legacy: Science, Land Ethic, and Conservation in Practice

Cost: $65

The Aldo Leopold Nature Center is rooted in the legacy of Aldo Leopold, who purchased a worn-out farm along the Wisconsin River in the 1930s and began restoring it. This is the work that inspired his influential book A Sand County Almanac. After his death in 1948, his family continued preserving the land and his ideas, eventually establishing the foundation in 1982 to promote Leopold’s “land ethic.” Today, the site includes the original Leopold Shack and the modern Leopold Center (or Legacy Center), which serves as a hub for conservation education, research, and public engagement, carrying forward his environmental philosophy.

The field trip will include a stop at the Pheasant Branch Conservancy. The Pheasant Branch Conservancy has been a focus of conservation in Dane County since the early 1960s, when local officials and residents recognized the ecological importance of the Pheasant Branch watershed amid rapid urban growth. Beginning with Middleton’s 1966 Park and Open Space Plan, land was gradually acquired and protected through collaboration between the city, Dane County Parks, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to preserve wetlands, prairies, and waterways. In 1995, community members formed the Friends of Pheasant Branch Conservancy to advocate for the site and lead restoration efforts, including habitat rehabilitation and invasive species removal. Today, the conservancy encompasses hundreds of acres of protected land and remains a regionally significant natural area supporting wildlife, water quality, and public recreation.

  • A guided tour will be included at the Aldo Leopold Center, offering a deeper look into Aldo Leopold’s legacy as you walk the very land that inspired his pioneering ethos. Hear the stories about the pioneering restoration work initiated by Leopold and his family, experience the inside of the Shack, and stroll through restored prairie and woods along the Wisconsin River.
  • We will drive past the Sólas Natural Burial Preserve and learn more about the cemetery practice in relation to cultural land use values.
  • Light hiking opportunities will be available at the Pheasant Branch Conservancy.

A boxed lunch will be provided at the Aldo Leopold Center.

The bus will stop at the Dane County Regional airport on the way back to the Madison Concourse.
